GPHG 2022 : MB&F wins the “AIGUILLE D’OR” award

Published - by Mathieu Celi — Updated on -

The GPHG 2022, Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, was held on November 10th in Geneva, an opportunity to to reward watchmaking productions the most innovative and exceptional of this year.

Many awards were presented, including the Men's watch price, Price of the iconic watch, Price of the tourbillon, Price of the complication for men and the coveted "Aiguille d'or". This is equivalent to a Nobel Prize, an Oscar or the Golden Palm in the field of watchmaking.

MB&F, 20 calibers in 17 years

This year, MB&F (Maximilian Büsser and Friends) wins the prestigious Golden Needle Award, thanks to its Legacy Machine Sequential EVO.

Founded in 2005 by Maximilian Büsser, this non-conformist manufacture develops timepieces dedicated to revisiting the great classics of watchmaking by breaking with traditional codes. We speak more of a laboratory of artistic watchmaking concepts.
At Maximilian Busser & Friends, traditional watchmaking traditions are respected, they do not constrain creative expression.

The manufacture that we no longer stop has produced 20 calibers in only 17 years of existence, a real feat, especially when its first chronograph movement is awarded the Aiguille d'or. But MB&F is not a newcomer, in fact, 2 prizes had already been won at the GPHG in 2021, the one of the complication for men with its LMX Titanium, as well as that of the watch crafts with his LM SE Eddy Jaquet "Le Tour du Monde en 80 Jours".

During the speech following the award of the Golden Needle, Maximilian tells an anecdote about this with one of his daughters:

When I was three years old, my older daughter drew me something that looked like a potato. She said no, it's a house. I told her: I love your potato house!
All children are creative because they are not afraid to be wrong.
Three months later, she came home from school making houses like all the other kids. Is school a hindrance on creativity?

Moral: Never forget your potato house!

Golden Hand 2022: Legacy Machine Sequential EVO

The MB&F Legacy Machine Sequential EVO watch is the big winner of this GPHG 2022. It is the first chronograph of the house.

It was in 2016 that Maximilian Büsser discussed with Stephen McDonnell, the possibility of a possible sequel to the Legacy Machine Perpetual. For Stephen, the majority of modern chronographs were not able to do the job they were designed to do.
The goal was not to remake a simple chronograph watch. Here, this traditional complication has been completely reinvited by bringing together two column wheel chronographs and a revolutionary binary switch, the Twinverter. Thanks to such a component, new timing modes are available, such as split-seconds and lap counter. In addition, the precision has also been optimized, since no drop in amplitude occurs when triggering the timing functions.

The different chronometry modes

This new MB&F is capable of measuring time in a linear, sequential or cumulative manner via different modes:

  • Independent measurement of one or more events with distinct starts and stops

  • Simultaneous measurement of several events with a simultaneous start and with different stops

  • Cumulatif measures the cumulative duration of two discontinuous events

  • Sequential : measurement of the duration of a multi-stage event

Our opinion

Breathtaking, grandiose, we can not remain indifferent to such a piece. Although imposing, the watch perfectly fits the shape of the wrist, and will not leave anyone indifferent. The chronometry functions are very easy to use, and one quickly gets used to the game. The finishing of the movement, the flying balance, the integration of the sub-counters, make it a very desirable piece for lovers of fine watchmaking and automobiles.

The setting of a watch may vary depending on its type and movement. Generally, the crown on the right side of the watch is pulled out to set the time and date. Some watches may have other complications, such as a chronograph function or a time zone complication. It is important to note that some watches may require more complex adjustments, such as synchronization with a time signal or movement adjustment. If you're not sure how to set your watch, it's a good idea to consult its user manual or seek the help of a watch professional.

Question

How to buy a watch?

Answer

Research brands, styles and prices, choose a model within your budget and taste. Choose a trusted retailer, either online or in-store. Verify the authenticity and quality of the watch, by examining certificates and calling in a watch expert (never rely on photos). Take the time to consider all aspects of the watch, such as size, material, movement and complications.
